A cyclist from the Jumbo-Visma team is in critical condition after a car accident, with his 8-month pregnant wife also in the vehicle.

Très vive inquiétude ce mardi 12 septembre, en Belgique ainsi qu’au sein de l’équipe Jumbo-Visma. Le coureur belge Nathan Van Hooydonck, membre de la formation néerlandaise, a été victime d’un grave accident de la circulation, rapporte le média flamand HLN.

The 27-year-old runner was in Kalmthout, a Flemish city in the province of Antwerp. Around 8:30 in the morning, while driving towards an intersection, the young man suffered a heart attack and lost control of the vehicle. In his frantic race, the car collided with 5 vehicles that were lined up in front of a traffic light.

Nathan Van Hooydonck was severely injured and received on-site resuscitation from the emergency services. He was then transported to the hospital, conscious but seriously injured. His condition is considered critical.

Also in the car at the time of the tragedy was Alicia, the runner’s wife, who was 8 months pregnant. Miraculously, she did not suffer any serious injuries. This is another extremely difficult ordeal for a couple who had already mourned the loss of their first child, Thiago, stillborn in December 2021.
