During a conversation on X (formerly Twitter), Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu urged billionaire Elon Musk on Monday to combat anti-Semitism on his social media platform. The two men also discussed the topic of artificial intelligence.

Le Premier ministre israélien, Benjamin Netanyahu, et le milliardaire Elon Musk ont évoqué, lundi 18 septembre, les dangers liés à l’intelligence artificielle (IA), la politique israélienne et la modération des contenus sur X, anciennement Twitter, lors d’une conversation en direct sur la plateforme du patron de Tesla et SpaceX.
« I hope that you will find the ability to put an end to anti-Semitism (on X) or to push it back as much as possible, within the limits of freedom of speech, » said Benjamin Netanyahu to the president of X.
Elon Musk a récemment menacé de poursuites judiciaires l’ADL, qui lutte contre l’antisémitisme et le racisme. Il estime que cette ONG a fait fuir les annonceurs du réseau social avec des accusations, selon lui infondées, au sujet de la progression rapide des discours de haine sur le réseau social depuis qu’il l’a racheté en octobre 2022.
« I know that you are determined to fight against any collective hatred of the people that anti-Semitism targets, and I hope that you will succeed. It is not an easy task, but I encourage you to find a balance, » added the Prime Minister, who is visiting the United States for the UN General Assembly this week.
Elon Musk stated that he cannot prevent the publication of all hate messages on X, which now has « 550 million monthly users. » In May 2022, Twitter had reported approximately 230 million daily active users.
The controversial leader, however, stated that he was « opposed to any attacks from any group of people, regardless of the group. » « I am in favor of anything that advances civilization and ultimately allows us to become a space-faring civilization, where we understand the nature of the universe. We cannot achieve this if there is a lot of internal strife, hatred, and negativity, » he explained.

The conversation primarily focused on AI, its potential benefits, and its dangers for society. Benjamin Netanyahu listed advancements and promises – on life expectancy, medicine, robots to assist the elderly, the end of traffic congestion on land and in the air, automation in industry and agriculture, « the end of shortages » – but also numerous perils, particularly for democracy, when AI is used for harmful purposes or if it ever « takes control of humans ».
« I believe that in many ways, we are currently at a turning point for all of humanity, where we must choose between a blessing and a curse, » he said to Elon Musk.

The billionaire, who established his own AI company this year, expressed his optimism about the ability of international leaders to cooperate in order to prevent disasters related to this technology. « Every sport has some form of referee, » he stated, urging to avoid a reckless race towards AI similar to that of nuclear weapons.
Elon Musk est l’un des fondateurs de l’entreprise OpenAI (créatrice de ChatGPT) dont il a ensuite quitté le conseil d’administration. Il a également co-fondé Neuralink, une start-up qui conçoit des implants neuronaux, notamment dans le but d’arriver à une « symbiose avec l’intelligence artificielle (IA) », selon ses mots de 2020.
The billionaire frequently issues warnings about the dangers of AI and has held discussions with political leaders from Washington to Beijing on this topic. Last week, he attended a series of closed-door meetings at the US Congress, alongside other tech giants such as Mark Zuckerberg from Meta and Sam Altman from OpenAI, as the United States is working on new laws to enhance control over this technology.
