The Minister of Economy, Bruno Le Maire, requested on Thursday that the CEO of TotalEnergies, Patrick Pouyanné, extend the fuel price cap of 1.99 euros per liter beyond December 31, while ruling out the possibility of intervention by the French government.
« Il est mon souhait que Total, qui a fait une promesse que je salue, maintienne le plafonnement de tous les prix des carburants – diesel, essence – à 1,99 euro jusqu’à la fin de l’année, et étende cette limitation à 1,99 euro pour tous les carburants au-delà du 31 décembre 2023 », a exprimé Bruno Le Maire lors d’une interview sur Franceinfo.
TotalEnergies announced in late August that it will continue its commitment, first implemented in March, to cap the fuel price at 1.99 euros per liter until the end of the year.

« Il revient à Patrick Pouyanné de prendre la décision, mais je salue la décision prise par Total depuis un certain temps maintenant, et je souhaite encore une fois lui exprimer ma confiance quant à sa prise en compte des difficultés de nos compatriotes », a-t-il continué.
Regarding an extension, TotalEnergies referred to statements made last Friday by Patrick Pouyanné on Public Sénat. « This measure will apply until the end of the year. We will look into the matter for 2024. I believe that the measure is effective, understandable, and therefore has many virtues. If we see that the French understand it, why not make it permanent? But let’s take things one step at a time, » said the CEO of TotalEnergies. Bruno Le Maire dismissed the possibility of a government discount, even if the price of fuel were to exceed 2 euros per liter.
