Ben O’Keeffe, néo-zélandais, officie au sifflet ce jeudi 14 septembre, pour la rencontre des Bleus face aux « Teros » uruguayens. Il y a peu, ce dernier avait l’objet d’un flot d’insultes.
At the age of 34, Ben O’Keeffe is participating in his second Rugby World Cup, following Japan in 2019. He is an internationally recognized referee who began his career at a young age (in 2008, at the age of 19) and has been a professional since 2013.

Les Bleus, il les connaît pour les avoir arbitrés neuf fois. Récemment, il était à la direction du jeu lors de la défaite française en Ecosse (25-21, 5 août) en match de préparation ; mais aussi lors d’Angleterre-France, succès canon des tricolores à Twickenham au dernier Tournoi des 6 Nations (53-10, 11 mars).

Ben O’Keeffe did not let these insults pass at the time of the incident. « These abuses are never acceptable, » he said. « As a referee operating at the highest level, I had to accept and get used to the post-match vitriol that fans now normalize. » Continuing, he said, « It’s a sad reality to say, but it no longer affects me. But that doesn’t mean everything is fine either… »

Note that Ben O’Keeffe, who speaks French, has already refereed the Stade Toulousain in the Top 14 in October 2022 against Bayonne. He had also officiated a match between Stade Français and Racing in February 2023.
