On Friday, September 15th, the government spokesperson, Olivier Véran, will be visiting Beaucaire, a city that has been administered by the National Rally mayor Julien Sanchez since 2014. This visit comes twenty-four hours before Marine Le Pen and Jordan Bardella’s party holds its summer universities in the city of Gard.
« I am the government spokesperson, my role is to go out into the field and show concretely what the State is doing for the residents. I am also the Minister in charge of democracy, and as such, it is more about listening to people’s voices and using them to influence and change public policies. This September 15th is World Democracy Day, and for the past year, I have been traveling across the country, meeting its residents and elected officials, to have discussions without considering the political affiliation of the municipalities, » Olivier Véran assured us on Thursday.
« Je n’incrimine personne »
Before adding: « I recently explained that I also wanted to visit municipalities held by the RN. Upon learning this, the mayor of Beaucaire extended an invitation to come as soon as possible. And I am delighted. And as the president of the community of municipalities, Juan Martinez, wanted to organize a debate on democratic issues and wanted to present me with the great successes of the region, I accepted. »
That being said, Olivier Véran stated: « The RN can of course organize its summer universities in Beaucaire or elsewhere. They have been democratically elected, they are representatives of the people, but that does not make them the owners of the territory. I have very strong convictions that I want to uphold and share, but I listen to everyone, I do not incriminate anyone, and it is not for me to judge the nature of the votes of others. All French citizens have a role to play in the public debate. »
