The Springboks, who had made changes to their team compared to the one that defeated Scotland on the first day (18-3), played their rugby smoothly. They quickly took the lead (26-0) after twelve minutes of play, with scrum-half Cobus Reinach scoring two tries. It seemed like they were heading towards a victory and a historic lead, but South Africa eased off a bit and went into halftime leading (33-0).
