As the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, delivered her final State of the Union speech this week, the 27 member states are now preparing for the upcoming European elections in June 2024. In France, the political landscape is taking shape, sometimes with intense tensions. On the left, the idea of a single candidacy from the Nupes did not last long, much to the disappointment of Jean-Luc Mélenchon. Marie Toussaint has been chosen as the lead candidate for EELV, while Léon Deffontaines has been chosen for the PCF. The PS has decided to run independently and will soon decide on whether to continue their partnership with Raphaël Glucksmann’s Place publique. Glucksmann, one of the most active French MEPs, has expressed his desire to run again. In the absence of a Nupes list, LFI may consider reappointing Manon Aubry.
À l’extrême droite, Jordan Bardella tirera la liste du RN, Marion Maréchal celle de Reconquête. Chez les LR se pose la question de la reconduction de François-Xavier Bellamy, très proche des thèses d’Eric Zemmour, et dont la ligne identitaire avait fait une contre-performance en 2019.
Ne reste plus que le camp macroniste où le remue-méninges tourne à plein régime. Qui, après Nathalie Loiseau en 2019, pour tirer la liste de la majorité présidentielle Renaissance (Renew) et la conduire si possible devant celle du RN ?
Les ambitions de Thierry Breton
Faute de candidat officiellement désigné par Emmanuel Macron – qui aura évidemment le dernier mot – plusieurs hypothèses circulent. Eurodéputé sortant et macroniste de la première heure, Stéphane Séjourné pourrait arguer, en tant que président du groupe Renew, d’avoir la priorité pour la tête de liste. Mais l’effacé et peu médiatique conseiller spécial de l’Elysée et secrétaire général de Renaissance, à l’agenda écartelé entre Paris et Bruxelles, pourrait passer la main. Le nom de l’ancien ministre du Développement Pascal Canfin circule aussi à l’heure où l’UE va devoir déployer son Green Deal. Idem pour Clément Beaune qui fut ministre délégué chargé de l’Europe jusqu’en juillet 2022.
The most serious candidate at the moment is the current Commissioner for the Internal Market, Thierry Breton. The former Minister of Economy is currently highly visible in the French media, promoting his efforts to regulate internet giants and defend the European industry. His candidacy would primarily allow him to regain legitimacy through the election, strengthening his position as a commissioner and potentially even aiming for the presidency of the European Commission.
Things could start to unfold after Emmanuel Macron’s upcoming speech on Europe and the Renaissance back-to-school campus on October 7th and 8th.
