Why is Eric Ciotti looking for an alternative solution for the European elections?

Two numbers haunt Eric Ciotti’s nightmares: 5%, the threshold that Les Républicains (LR) must reach in the upcoming European elections in order to have seats in the Strasbourg Parliament; and 3%, the percentage they must exceed in order to have their campaign expenses reimbursed. Since Valérie Pécresse’s failure in the 2022 presidential election, the LR president knows that surpassing these thresholds is no longer a mere formality. On Monday, he will participate in a working meeting on the party’s strategy for the European elections, with the presence of LR’s chief MEP, François-Xavier Bellamy, former European Commissioner Michel Barnier, and the movement’s secretary general, Annie Genevard. The objective is to find the magic formula to ward off another electoral defeat.
