Il sera resté moins de deux ans en poste. Nommé en 2022, le préfet du Tarn, François-Xavier Lauch va quitter ses fonctions dans les jours à venir.
The announcement is expected to be made official on Wednesday, September 13, following the council of ministers. François-Xavier Lauch will soon no longer be the prefect of Tarn, a position he has held since January 26, 2022. He is expected to be appointed as the prefect of Hérault, replacing Hugues Moutouh.
It is definitely a sign of trust from the government to entrust him with a strategic department, three times more populated than the Tarn. This is a significant boost in the career of this civil servant, who is close to Darmanin and, at only 41 years old, is one of the youngest prefects in France and a promising talent in Macron’s administration.
In Tarn, he will be remembered as a proactive prefect, always quick to defend the actions of law enforcement and government services in the media. He was a supporter of the A69 highway and major infrastructure projects, and also played a role in reviving discussions about Sivens, which had been stagnant for many years.

During his 20-month tenure, he will have had to deal with wolf attacks, the 2022 drought, urban riots following Nahel’s death, and the controversy surrounding the Réalmont reception center.

Sur le front politique, il cultivait une forte proximité avec la maire d’Albi, Stéphanie Guiraud-Chaumeil (Horizons). L’histoire retiendra qu’il s’en ira avant d’avoir eu le temps de reconduire l’homologation du circuit d’Albi.
Plusieurs postes exposés
Diplômé de Sciences Po Bordeaux et de l’Ena (promo République), François-Xavier Lauch a déjà eu l’occasion d’occuper par le passé plusieurs fonctions très exposées, notamment celles de directeur de cabinet du préfet des Alpes-Maritimes au moment de l’attentat de Nice de 2016. Il a également été chef de cabinet à l’Elysée au moment de l’affaire Benalla (dont il était le supérieur hiérarchique) et directeur de cabinet adjoint de Gérald Darmanin à l’Intérieur entre 2020 et 2022.
Le nom de son successeur dans le Tarn n’est pas encore connu.
