Alsu Kurmasheva devient la deuxième journaliste américaine détenue en Russie en 2023. La journaliste russo-américaine a été arrêtée dans la ville russe de Kazan, a annoncé mercredi 18 octobre son employeur Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL).

Les autorités accusent Alsu Kurmasheva d’avoir « délibérément mené une collecte d’informations militaires sur les activités russes via Internet afin de transmettre ces informations à des sources étrangères » en septembre 2022 ainsi que d’avoir « mené des campagnes d’informations discréditant la Russie », détaille l’agence de presse officielle Tatar-Inform.
The journalist, who usually lives in Prague, had to travel to Russia for a « family emergency » on May 20th, and was temporarily arrested on June 2nd before her return flight to Kazan, explains RFE/RL. Her American and Russian passports were confiscated, leaving her unable to leave Russia, until her indictment was finally announced on Wednesday.
Appel à « libérer immédiatement » la journaliste
According to a statement from the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), based in New York, the journalist was reportedly held in temporary detention on Wednesday evening, as reported by Tatar-Inform.
The CPJ also urges Russia to « immediately release » the journalist and « drop all charges » against her. « Journalism is not a crime, and Kurmasheva’s detention is further evidence of Russia’s determination to suppress independent journalism, » states the organization in a press release.
Alsu Kurmasheva est la seconde journaliste américaine à être arrêtée en Russie en 2023. Elle vient s’ajouter au journaliste du Wall Street Journal, Evan Gershkovich, détenu pour espionnage à Moscou depuis le 29 mars – accusation que le reporter récuse.
According to RFE/RL, Alsu « Kurmasheva is an experienced journalist who has extensively covered the ethnic minorities of Tatarstan and Bashkortostan in the Volga and Ural regions of Russia. »
