After the Arras attack, live: in Lyon, sadness and determination in Samuel Paty’s former high school.

Minute de silence chargée d’émotion et Marseillaise chantée en chœur par l’ensemble des élèves réunis dans la cour avec leurs professeurs et les agents administratifs, le moment d’hommage à Dominique Bernard s’est déroulé en début d’après-midi au collège Gaston-Defferre de Marseille, comme partout en France. Le recteur de l’academie Aix-Marseille, Bernard Beignier, s’était déplacé dans cet établissement du 7^e arrondissement de Marseille pour apporter son soutien à l’ensemble de la communauté éducative et parler aux élèves. Dans un court discours, il a tracé un parallèle avec l’assassinat de Samuel Paty, trois ans plus tôt : « C’est parce que ces professeurs enseignent la profondeur de notre pays qu’ils ont été visés, morts dans ce qui est pour nous le champ d’honneur, chacun dans leur établissement. »

A few minutes earlier, Sylvain Fernandez-Malavieille, the school principal for the past five years, wanted to convey a message of hope and resilience: « The school of the Republic, so hated and despised by terrorists, will rise again as it has done every time. We are and will remain standing together, » assured the principal, who, for the past three years, has made it a point to address his teachers to commemorate the murder of Samuel Paty.

The teachers had gathered at 8 o’clock in the morning. « Some had lost their voice. For them, it was difficult to speak. For me too, » acknowledged Mr. Fernandez-Malavieille. « There is sometimes a feeling of helplessness, but the energy of culture and knowledge allows us to fight to uphold the values of the Republic, » he assures.

Marie, an English teacher, was preparing to delve deeper into things in her afternoon classes: « The most important message to convey to students is to stick to the facts and understand what happened. Faced with images and comments, we must help them learn to form their own opinion. » « We now know that this can happen anywhere, anytime. But I don’t want to live in fear, » the teacher continues. « I will continue to do my job as usual. »
