Members of La France Insoumise are pointing out a satirical drawing from the newspaper, which depicts Danièle Obono and Israeli hostages, as being racist and antisemitic.

Many internet users, as well as members of La France Insoumise, are accusing a representation that they deem racist and antisemitic. « Charlie Hebdo’s drawing plays on the ‘good old days of colonies’ and quietly signals the return of racist and antisemitic caricatures, » reacted Mathilde Panot, president of the LFI group in the National Assembly, also expressing her « sisterhood » to her « comrade and friend, » Danièle Obono. « Racism and antisemitism in one drawing. What a shame, » adds Manuel Bompard. « Absolutely disgusting, » criticizes Green senator Mélanie Vogel.

Le député Arnaud Le Gall a dénoncé une caricature « sortie d’une exposition coloniale » et relève des « otages israéliens aux nez crochus qui pourrait illustrer un livre de Drumont » (en référence à Edouard Drumont, journaliste et homme politique figure de l’antisémitisme français). Rachel Keke a fustigé une caricature « raciste et antisémite », « digne du pire des torchons d’extrême droite ! ».

Manon Aubry, on her part, described the drawing as « disgusting ». « My colleague Danièle Obono once again targeted after an intolerable caricature by Valeurs actuelles. Nausea, » she added. The far-right weekly magazine had been convicted in 2022 for racist insult after imagining Danièle Obono’s life during the « time of slavery » in August 2020.

For the past few days, the LFI deputy has been at the center of a controversy. The Minister of Interior, Gérald Darmanin, has announced filing a complaint for endorsing terrorism. The issue stems from remarks made by the elected official during an interview where she does not label Hamas as a terrorist group but rather as « a resistance movement that defines itself as such. »

On Thursday, the Minister of Interior announced that he reported a « crime of disseminating information related to the private life of an elected official » regarding the supposedly assigned phone number of Danièle Obono. The dissemination exposes the deputy to « a risk of harassment » and constitutes « an infringement on the psychological integrity of the person, » stated Gérald Darmanin in a letter, as reported by BFMTV.
