On Thursday, October 19, 2023, Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin stated that he would retract his statements regarding the links between Karim Benzema and the Muslim Brotherhood if the latter tweeted in tribute to Professor Dominique Bernard, who was killed in the Arras attack.
The minister stands by his position. According to him, the football player has well-known ties to the Muslim Brotherhood, an Islamist group. On the BFMTV set Thursday night, Gérald Darmanin supported the idea that he would reconsider his judgment if the Ballon d’Or 2022 tweeted in honor of the teacher killed in the Arras attack, Dominique Bernard.

Pour le ministre de l’Intérieur, la position affichée par le joueur sur X (Twitter), quant à la guerre Israël-Hamas n’est pas assez claire. Il soutient que Karim Benzema « tweet de manière sélective », dépréciant davantage les actions de Benjamin Netanyahou que celles du groupe islamiste à l’origine du conflit lancé le 7 octobre.
Gérald Darmanin a demandé, promettant le retrait de ses allégations en échange, à Karim Benzema de tweeter sur la mémoire de Dominique Bernard ou les exactions du Hamas, afin de démontrer qu’il n’est pas lié à un « Islam radical ».
Sur BFMTV, il a égrainé une liste de constats : « Je constate que Karim Benzema n’a toujours pas fait un tweet pour l’assassinat de ce professeur à Arras, pour les bébés décapités, pour les femmes violées, pour les 1300 massacrés par le terrorisme islamiste en Israël »
He promised that he would reconsider his judgment if the player complied: « If Mr. Benzema wants to show his good faith and is capable of tweeting about the death of this teacher, to express that he also mourns the death of a French teacher, then I will retract my statements. »

« Ces bombardements injustes »
Karim Benzema n’a pas encore réagi à cette déclaration. Pour rappel, le footballeur avait twitté le 15 octobre dernier : « Toutes nos prières pour les habitants de Gaza victimes une fois de plus de ces bombardements injustes qui n’épargnent ni femmes ni enfants ».
Some internet users viewed negatively the fact that his message only mourned the death of Gazans, arguing that these victims also deserved a thought, considering the recent Hamas attack on Israel that resulted in hundreds of deaths.
