More than 35,000 spectators, including a few hundred fans of the Swedish team, had to remain inside the King Baudouin Stadium for over two hours after the match was definitively stopped, as at least two Swedish supporters had just been shot near the venue, victims of automatic weapon fire on the sidelines of this Euro 2024 qualification match.
Au moins deux personnes sont décédées à Bruxelles, ce lundi 16 octobre au soir, victimes de tirs à l’arme automatique, au cœur de la capitale belge. Selon plusieurs médias locaux, la piste terroriste est envisagée.

According to initial reports, the victims were supporters of the Swedish national football team, who were scheduled to play against the Belgian Red Devils on Monday evening in the Euro 2024 qualifiers. The match was halted at halftime (1-1) as the Swedish players refused to continue playing after the tragedy.
Approximately 35,000 supporters remained confined in the King Baudouin Stadium for over two hours after the final halt of the match was announced, due to security reasons. Several of them shared their testimonies on social media.

L’ambiance sur place est restée très anxiogène, notamment au sein des quelques centaines de fans suédois présents, comme en témoignent des images prises par les journalistes reporters-photographes de l’Agence France Presse notamment.

The attack that occurred on the evening of Monday, October 16th in Brussels has been classified as a « terrorist attack » by Belgian authorities. Law enforcement officers were deployed around the stadium to evacuate the public.
As part of this procedure, the authorities asked the few hundred Swedish fans to leave their section and gather in a secure room still inside the stadium. They were then asked to remove any signs of their support for the football team they had come to cheer for, such as jerseys and scarves. This was done to allow them to leave the premises without potentially being identified.
Just before midnight, some videos on social media showed a desire to lighten the mood by… creating a wave!

C’est également peu avant minuit, que les premiers spectateurs ont pu, enfin, être évacués de l’enceinte.
La Suède avait provoqué la colère de certains pays du Proche-Orient après de récentes manifestations lors desquelles des exemplaires du Coran avaient été brûlés. Une communication d’Al-Qaïda appelait ainsi à s’en prendre à des ressortissants.
Furthermore, a Swedish artist, Lars Vilks, has long been targeted by Al-Qaeda for drawing a caricature of the prophet Muhammad. Vilks, who survived an attack in 2015, passed away in 2021 due to a road accident.
