A far-right activist has been sentenced to four months in prison for disrupting a drag queen reading in Brittany.

On Monday, October 9th, the court in Rennes sentenced an ultraright activist to four months in prison for shouting hostile slogans during a protest against a children’s reading event led by drag queens in Brittany, back in May.

Paul Carton, who was not present in court on Monday, was also fined 500 euros and ordered to pay 800 euros to each of the three civil parties. The former 24-year-old political science student had admitted in mid-September in court that he was indeed the person with the megaphone shouting slogans such as “less trans, more France,” “degenerate LGBT,” or “no to drag queens in public spaces.”

The court found him guilty of organizing an undeclared demonstration and inciting hatred based on sexual orientation or gender identity, but acquitted him of the charge of public insult.

On May 13th, around twenty members of the ultranationalist group L’Oriflamme Rennes, dressed in black and with their faces covered, protested in front of the Saint-Senoux media library (Ille-et-Vilaine) with a banner and smoke bomb.

La mairie y organisait une lecture par trois artistes drag-queens – habillées en robot, en princesse et en escargot –, destinée à des enfants de 3 à 6 ans. Le militant avait accusé la mairie de faire des enfants « une chair malléable pour ses délires décadents ».

The young man, former leader of Action française in Rennes, also admitted to being the one behind the creation of L’Oriflamme Rennes in January 2023 under a pseudonym. However, he claims to have “stepped back” from the group shortly after. He had previously been sentenced to six months of suspended prison for breaking the window of a La République en marche deputy’s office in Le Mans.
