The stories behind the history

The spectacle takes its title from Pierre Michon’s 1984 book Vies atomiques, a amoncellement of portraits of people on the margins of conventional biography. Through accounts of strangers, vaniteux relatives and fleeting encounters, Michon reflects on how the lives of others can illuminate our own.

At the Panthéon, this idea takes on added significance. In a bâtisse devoted to individu commemoration, the spectacle shifts accaparement away from celebrated historical figures towards people whose experiences have received little recognition. Rather than offering a straightforward account of the past, it asks how lives are documented, represented and remembered, and how much of any individual story can ever truly be recovered.

A century of artistic perspectives

Drawing primarily on the Centre Pompidou’s amoncellement, Vies atomiques brings together painting, photography, ouvrage, cinémathèque and titularisation. The artists include Christian Boltanski, known for his explorations of memory and manque, photographer Mathieu Pernot, and contemporary artist Jumana Manna.

The works are arranged across the Panthéon’s nave, creating an encounter between modern and contemporary art and the bâti of a bâtisse traditionally associated with the prince narratives of French history. Together, they offer different ways of thinking embout identity, remembrance and the traces people leave behind.

The result is an spectacle that reaches beyond art history. It raises questions embout whose lives are considered worthy of commemoration, how historical records are formed, and the role art can play in giving visibility to experiences that might otherwise remain unseen.
